RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao announced Thursday that Ed McLaughlin has been promoted to Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics. In addition, the VCU Board of Visitors has approved a three-year contract extension for the Athletic Department head that will run through 2019.
"Dr. Rao and the Board of Visitors provide a dynamic environment of success at VCU that I love and I am excited about the future of VCU Athletics. Working with our talented coaches, student-athletes and administrators every day inspires me to achieve even more than we have in the nearly two years that I have worked with them. My family is excited to know that we will call the Richmond community home for the foreseeable future.” McLaughlin said.
During McLaughlin’s introductory press conference, he promised a winning culture for VCU Athletics. Since then, VCU’s teams have won nearly 65 percent of their games, the highest mark in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Four different programs have achieved Top-25 status over the past two years, including two programs (men’s soccer and men’s basketball) twice. The Black & Gold have earned 14 NCAA appearances during McLaughlin’s tenure.
“I look forward to working with our staff on our achieving our goals, including our ultimate goal of winning a national championship, while providing a top-notch student-athlete experience,” McLaughlin added.
Off the field, VCU achieved the highest Academic Progress Rate in its history this year with an average of 970 for its 16 intercollegiate programs.
In addition, VCU Athletics has secured the two largest gifts in its history, a $4 million corporate partnership with HDL, Inc. and a $3 million gift from Meadwestvaco Corporation.
The Rams have recently announced that construction will begin in early June on a $25 million VCU Basketball Complex, adjacent to the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Externally, the department generated $8 million in overall revenue for the first time in school history last year, a feat that is expected to be repeated this year.
McLaughlin will enter his 24th consecutive year on a college campus next year after tenures at Niagara, American and Merrimack prior to his arrival at VCU.
