VCU senior guard Melvin Johnson (Bronx, N.Y.) has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season.
Johnson averaged 19.5 points and shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the field, including 47 percent (8-of-17) from 3-point range as VCU earned victories over Rhode Island and cross-town rival Richmond last week. The 6-foot-4 guard also tied B.A. Walker atop VCU’s all-time 3-point against Richmond. Johnson, who has hit 269 treys as a Ram, will look to become the program’s career leader Wednesday when VCU visits George Mason.
The Bronx, New York native is enjoying a splendid final season in black and gold. Johnson is averaging a team-best 18.2 points per game, the most by a Ram since the 2008-09 season. His 94 three-pointers are tied for second-most in school single-season history, and he ranks sixth nationally in made 3-pointers per game (3.48). Earlier this season, Johnson dropped a career-high 36 points on Florida State. He also ranks third on the team with 42 steals.
Behind Johnson, the Rams have forged a 20-7 record – the school’s 10th straight 20-win campaign – and VCU currently sits atop the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 12-2 league mark.
