After the Rams fell to the Big East's Seton Hall in the first round of this year's Charleston Classic, a Glenn Rice Jr. lead Georgia Tech squad roared back from an 8-point halftime deficit, scoring 50 second half points in the 73-60 final, sending VCU to 1-2 heading into a 2-game mini-series with former Sunbelt rival Western Kentucky.
A swarming VCU defense stifled the Yellow Jackets early, giving up just 23 points in the first half. But the son of the NBA's 11th most proficient shooter, Glen Rice Jr., channeled his pops and went on a second half tear, dropping 15 points -- including a one minute span where he outscored VCU 8-0 by himself -- grabbing three rebounds, and adding three steals in the half. Rice had only four points points heading into the second stanza.
VCU was once again troubled by the young team's offensive woes, as the Rams hit a mere 32% of their shots on the night, scoring just 18 points inside the 3-point line on the evening.
After a cold start to the season, senior Bradford Burgess managed to get somewhat on track, posting a team high 17 points to go with 5 rebounds on the evening. Burgess had only five points in the second half however, as VCU was outscored by 21 in the night's second act.
For the second straight evening, the Rams had a tough time on the glass, getting outrebounded 41-26.
Sophomore guard Rob Brandenberg actually lead VCU in rebounds with 6 on the night, the combined total of starting bigs DJ Haley (3) and Juvonte Reddic (3).
VCU will look to get back on track tomorrow at noon against a Western Kentucky team that has also struggled in this weekends tournament, losing by an average of 17.5 points in their first two rounds against Tulsa and LSU.
The loser however will get a quick shot at revenge, as the teams meet just three days later, playing Wednesday in Bowling Green Kentucky.
