This past weekend we witnessed just how big a win over VCU can be for A-10 opponents. A sold out Reilly Center saw St. Bonaventure students spill onto the floor in what looked like a huge win for the Bonnies. Seconds later however, Bona fans (and one ball hog security guard) would facilitate VCU in snatching victory from the jaws of defeat thanks to an administrative technical that helped the black and gold to an improbable win.
VCU awaits another likely road packed house when the Rams travel to DC on Wednesday to take on the Colonials of George Washington University. The black and gold last visited GW's Smith Center on February 27 of last year, a sold out contest the Rams would win by four points en route to a share of last year's A-10 title.
The sellout was one of four sold out A-10 road games last year for the Rams, a trend that has become a way of life for VCU since the program hit a new level following the 2011 Final 4 appearance and the five consecutive NCAA tournament trips since. The Rams have played in front of two road sellouts so far this season with a remaining schedule that includes three teams VCU played in front of sellouts last year (GW, Richmond, Dayton), as well as a roadie against a Rhode Island team competing for an A-10 regular season title.
2016-17 ROAD ATTENDANCE v TEAM'S SEASON AVERAGE
St. Bonaventure = 5,480 SELLOUT (4,276 season average)
Fordham = 2,186 (1415 season average)
Duquesne = 1,038 (1170 season average)
Davidson = 4,636 (4354 season average)
George Mason = 7,780 (4270 season average)
Old Dominion = 8472 SELLOUT (6417 season average)
Liberty = 3289 (2179 season average)
Total versus VCU: 32,881 (4,697 per game)
Total season average: 24,081 (3,440 per game)
Road games are tough for any team. Just 18 teams in college basketball (out of 351) have losing records at home since turning DI according to RPIRatings.com. Getting crowds 37% larger than their season averages, as VCU has done this season, only ramps up that degree of difficulty.
VCU's regular season schedule will finish in front of likely sellouts at Richmond (7,201), Rhode Island (7,657) and Dayton (13,409), all three currently within the top-four of the Atlantic 10 standings.
