Rams counter-punch the Fighting Camels in second half

VCU (4-4) handed the Fighting Camels of Campbell University just their second loss of the season in this afternoons, 65-61, contest.

With just 6:45 to play, Josh Banks checked into the game for his first time and proceed to go on a 5-0 run all by himself.

Banks used a fast-break and layup to give the Rams a 55-54 lead before hitting a three-pointer on the next possession.

The Rams never relinquished the lead from that point forward.

Campbell pulled within 2 points with 26 seconds left in the second half, but freshman, Jayden Nunn, hit two free throws that would prove to be the final points of the game.

Banks finished the night with 5 points in 3 minutes, while Nunn added 10 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

VCU tallied up a total of 21 points off 18 Campbell turnovers.

The Rams also won the battle on the boards, 33-32, which led to 13 second-chance points.

Levi Stockard scored 8 of the Rams first 10 points in the game, but they didn't come easy, or often, for VCU.

Despite the Rams scoring first, the Fighting Camels open the game on a 20-2 run over the first 7 minutes of play.

VCU responded with a 14-2 run of their own over the next 6 minutes to pull within 4 points.

Nunn hit a three-pointer to put the Rams up 31-30, but jumper from Jesus Carralero gave the Camels a 32-31 halftime lead.

Carralero finished with a 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists for Campbell.

Vince Williams led the Rams in all statistical categories with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 2 blocks.

VCU returns to action on Wednesday, December 8th as the host the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State University. That game is set to tip at 8pm EST.
