VCU pushed their win streak to five straight with a commanding 81-57 victory over Rhode Island in Kingston. The Rams (15-4, 5-1 A-10) used explosive runs and relentless defense to take down URI, with a 15-1 second-half surge serving as the exclamation point.

First Half Fireworks

The Rams raced out to a 33-15 lead behind a 14-1 blitz, only to see Rhode Island counter with a 19-2 run of their own. Sebastian Thomas and Jaden House combined for 17 points in that span, cutting VCU’s advantage to 35-34. But VCU regained control before halftime, taking a 40-34 edge into the break.

VCU capitalized on URI's early miscues, forcing 15 turnovers in the first half and turning them into 20 points. Brandon Jennings led the way with 2 steals in the opening 20 minutes, setting the tone for VCU's defensive tenacity.

Second-Half Dominance

After URI closed to within two points at 42-40 early in the second half, VCU slammed the door with a 15-1 run over 3 minutes and 27 seconds. The Rams shot 45% from the floor in the half, while their defense stifled URI, holding them to just 30% shooting.

Joe Bamisile led all scorers with 24 points on 55.6% shooting. He was joined in double figures by Max Shulga (15), Jack Clark (12), and Zeb Jackson (11). Luke Bamgboye delivered an honorable mention-worthy performance with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 4 steals in just 18 minutes of action.

Key Margins

VCU dominated the battle inside, outscoring URI 38-22 in the paint and owning a 42-34 edge on the boards. They also logged 17 steals to URI’s 10 and outscored them 30-18 off turnovers.

Next Up

VCU returns to action on Friday, January 24th, as they host a rematch game against St. Bonaventure. That game is set to tip at 9pm EST and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
