VCU fans were eager to welcome the Rams back to the Siegel Center after a historic beat down of East Tennessee State on Wednesday. VCU would also be welcoming the nations leading scorer in Lehigh's C.J. McCollum (25.7 ppg). Along with 7000 plus fans, there were 32 NBA scouts in attendance to see what McCollum could do.
Unfortunately for them they didn't get much of a show. VCU held him to 0 field goals and just 4 free throws as McCollum would only play the first half due to injury.
Despite not having their leading scorer for more than half of the game, Lehigh still managed to stick close with VCU as the Rams largest lead was just 10 points in the 59 to 55 victory for the Rams, continuing their winning streak to 9.
The Mountain Hawks fought hard to the buzzer giving the Siegel Center faithful a scare until Senior Troy Daniels hit a three with just 1:30 remaining to give the Rams a 4 point lead, 55-51. Lehigh would cut the Rams lead to just 2 points with just 25 seconds remaining but Senior Darius Theus would hit two crucial free throws to put the Rams back up by 4 with 25 seconds left but the Mountain Hawks could not hit a bucket in the final stretch.
Sophomore Treveon Graham would led all VCU scorers with 17 points while Junior Rob Branenberg dropped in 11. Junior Juvonte Reddic struggled from the field again scoring just 4 points and being shutout in the first half only taking just three shots after picking up two fouls early.
The first match up between the Rams and Lehigh (Patriot League) saw the battle of the boards fought and won by Lehigh, out rebounding VCU 40 to 33.
The Rams 27th consecutive sellout saw the Lehigh turn the ball over 22 times turning into 18 points for VCU.
VCU moves to 12-3 on the season and will kick A10 Conference play on Wednesday as they host the Dayton Flyers.
