Mike'l Simms used four three-pointers in the first half—with two of those coming in the final two minutes—to lead the Rams charging back into the competition.
Simms scored a career-high 20 points while shooting 6 of 11 from distance.
VCU used a 14-0 run over the end of the first half and start of the second half.
A a layup by senior Jonathan Williams and a three-pointer by senior Khris Lane gave the Rams there first lead, 46-45, with 18:53 remaining in the second half.
Lane would finish the night with 13 points and 3 rebounds.
Williams ended the night with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Three free throws by Tillman gave the Rams their largest lead of the night with 11 points and 5:15 left in the game.
But in the final five minutes the game flipped to GMU's favor.
A three pointer by Otis Livingston II with 5:00 left was the start of a 14-5 run by the Patriots to close out the game.
Livingston II scored 10 of his 26 points in the final five minutes. His 26 points tied a game-high with his teammate, Goanar Mar.
Ian Boyd tipped in a missed Livingston II shot with 1 second left in the game to clinch the win for GMU.
This was the third straight game that Ian Boyd has hit a buzzer beater for the Patriots in the last 7 days.
Issac Vann was the only other Ram to record a double digit scoring effort on the night with 18 points while also grabbing 6 rebounds.
