In their first road contest of the year, the Rams needed a gutsy second half from the upperclassmen to leave Lynchburg, VA with a 64-59 win.
JeQuan Lewis (13pts) played the entire 40 minutes, and hit a big three to end the first half to give the Rams the lead, 34-31.
LU would come out of the half and quickly score to close within two points at the 19:33 mark, but would never get that close again.
VCU used an 11-2 run to distance themselves with just over ten minutes left in the game. During that run, Lewis hit a layup and a three-pointer before Mo Alie-Cox (12pts, 6rebs) and Jonathan Williams (4pts, 3ast) each notched a dunk.
John Dawson of Liberty would hit a big three to pull the Flames within three points with 24 seconds left to play.
A quick foul by Liberty led to a missed front-end of a one-and-one free throw by Doug Brooks. Alie-Cox was fouled on his offensive rebound and was sent to the free throw line to shoot for the double bonus. The senior big man would hit 4-4 free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure the victory.
The Rams improve to 2-0 on the young season and will meet again Friday, November 18 at 7pm against Binghamton. This will be the final game before VCU leaves for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Paradise Island.
