VCU shook off a slow start and powered past George Washington, 80-72, on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C., securing its 20th win of the season and strengthening its grip on the Atlantic 10 race.
Clark Leads the Charge
Graduate forward Jack Clark was everywhere for the Rams, putting up 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal. He was especially deadly from beyond the arc, hitting four of his seven three-point attempts.
Zeb Jackson added a key spark off the bench, contributing 15 points while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from deep and knocking down 6-of-7 free throws. Joe Bamisile (14 points, five rebounds) and Phillip Russell (11 points, four assists) also played critical roles in the win.
Turning the Tide
The Rams found themselves in an early hole, falling behind 21-10 midway through the first half. But a Clark layup and a Russell three-pointer helped get the offense rolling. Russell later gave VCU its first lead at 35-34 with under two minutes left before halftime.
Despite trailing 46-43 early in the second half, VCU flipped the script with a game-changing 24-9 run. Clark’s three-pointer at the 16:07 mark started the surge, and his deep shot with 11:08 left gave the Rams breathing room at 58-51.
When George Washington closed the gap to 72-68 with just over two minutes to play, VCU responded with clutch free throws from Jackson and a thunderous baseline dunk from Bamisile to seal the deal.
Looking Ahead
VCU will look to keep rolling when they return to the Siegel Center on Feb. 19 to face UMass. The game tips off at 6 p.m. and will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
