VCU (2-1) head coach, Ryan Odom, called his first timeout less than four minutes into the game.
After the Highlanders kicked off the game on a 10-2 run, it looked like the Rams would once again struggle to find a rhythm to their offense.
But, as the saying goes, this is tale of two halves.
The Rams trailed by as many as 9 points with just over 3-minutes left to play in the first half when Fats Billups III rattled off 5 straight points to trim the lead.
Just a minute after Jason Nelson knocked down a triple, Zeb Jackson hit a step-back long range bomb from the wing to cap an 11-0 run for the Rams.
Nelson would end the night with a team-high 19 points on 70% shooting from the floor—including going 4-5 from behind the arc.
Halftime started locked up in a 33-point tie game.
A right-handed layup off the glass for Jackson to start the second half gave the Rams their first lead of the night, 35-33.
Jackson ended the night with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.
A triple from Radford would briefly secure the lead for the Highlanders, but a layup from Kuany Kuany catapulted the Rams into a 16-0 run.
The Rams wouldn't relinquish their lead for the remainder of the night.
The defensive pressure by VCU held Radford to a paltry 18% shooting from the floor in the second half.
VCU also spent the final 20 minutes taking much better care of the ball with only 4 second half turnovers. The Rams ended the night with a season low 10 turnovers.
Tobi Lawal added 9 points and 6 rebounds in the second half for the Rams. He ended the night with his debut double-double on the season with 12 points, and 10 rebounds.
VCU outscored Radford 36-18 in the paint.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, November 18th as they take on the Redhawks of Seattle. That game is set to tip at 7PM and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
