Rams soar past Hawks, 80-64, to open conference play

VCU (8-2, 1-0) opened conference play on the road, but ran into no difficulty while taking down St. Joe's, 80-64.

The Hawks jumped out to a 10 point lead early behind 70% shooting, but eventually the Rams defense settled and pushed SJU into a 7:17 drought from the floor. VCU defense limited SJU to 38% on the day.

The Rams shot 46% overall while going 8-19 for 42% from range.

A triple from freshman, Jamir Watkins, gave the Rams the 23-21 lead at the 6:34 mark in the first half.

VCU wouldn't trail again for the remainder of the game.

Back to back triples from Ace Baldwin and Tre Clark pushed VCU out to a 17-2 run and lead to 40-32 half time lead.

St. Joe's turned the ball over 24 times resulting in 27 points for VCU. The Rams turned the ball over 15 times.

KeShawn Curry (10pts/2stl) and Watkins (10pts/4reb) contributed 20 of the VCU bench total of 32 points.

Vince Williams led the Rams with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. All three stats were a team-high tally for Williams.

Baldwin chipped in 12 points and 4 rebounds. He also led the team with 4 steals on the afternoon.

VCU combined for 12 steals overall compared to SJU's 2.

Levi Stockard III was the fifth Ram to climb to double-digit scoring today with 10 points in addition to 3 steals.

All 11 Rams who saw action tonight scored.

The win marked six straight for the Rams.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, January 2nd as the host the Wildcats of Davidson. That game is set to tip at 2:30pm EST and will be broadcast on NBCSN.
