VCU's cold play from earlier in the week continued as the Rams suffered yet another ugly loss, this time falling at Richmond, 77-59.
The Spiders hit their first double-digit lead just over 10 minutes into the game and never looked back, locking VCU down defensively while shooting 50% from the field including a blistering 11-22 from three.
The Rams were without staring point guard, Marcus Evans and failed to get anything going all night in the loss. The black and gold connected on just 34.3% of their attempts including a brutal 19% from long range.
Marcus Santos-Silva led VCU with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. He was 6-11 from the field.
Senior Issac Vann was VCU only other double-digit scorer at 10 points, but after a hot start finished just 4-13 from the field.
Bones Hyland got the start via the injury to Evans. The usually dependable freshman went 1-6 from the field and had no assists to four turnovers. He was joined in the starting lineup by Vince Williams, the sophomore making his first start of his career, but finishing just 3-11 from the field in the loss.
It was the second consecutive loss for the black and gold and the third game over their last four where they've trailed by at least 17 points in a loss. VCU has a chance to add to that unfortunate streak when welcoming No.6 Dayton to the Stu on Tuesday. The Flyers defeated VCU by 14 in Dayton earlier this season and currently ranked as the second best offense in the country.
The loss drops VCU to 7-5 in A-10 play a season after winning the regular season title at 16-2. That currently puts the Rams in a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference. Only the top-4 teams in league play earn the coveted double-bye that creates a three-game path to an A-10 title.
The loss also hands VCU yet another NCAA tournament resume hit. VCU saw their name today on CBS Bracketologist, Jerry Palm's, first four out next to Richmond, but with another loss will move further off the bubble and more into NIT range.
The Rams have ample time to turn things around however, with the giant contest on deck against A-10 undefeated Dayton (23-2, 12-0). The black and gold have two top-100 road opportunities as well, traveling to both Saint Louis (Feb 21) and Davidson (Mar 6) and host kenpom No.92 Duquesne in a potentially important A-10 seeding matchup as well.
