VCU struggled early and often tonight, dropping a surprising road upset at George Mason, 76-69.
The Rams saw foul trouble to Mo Alie-Cox early and weren't able to get much going with him on the bench for 15 of tonight's first 20 minutes of play. The black and gold were held to 32% shooting from the field and an ice-cold 3-13 from deep, resulting in a five-point halftime deficit.
The Rams strung together a number of mini-runs in the second half but none large enough that Mason couldn't answer, and Mason's 50% shooting on the night to VCU's 36.6% did the Rams in for their worst loss of the season.
Melvin Johnson led all players with 24 points in the loss. He was one of just two Rams to hit double-digits, Korey Billbury chipping in 13 points of his own on 6-14 shooting.
Alie-Cox finished with eight points and four rebounds in his 25 minutes of action.
VCU was out-rebounded by 10 boards and outscored by that same number at the free throw line.
The Rams were whistled for 26 fouls to Mason's 16 and were never able to establish a rhythm in the loss.
Even with tonight's shocking final, VCU remains tied for first atop the A-10 standings at 12-3.
VCU will hit the road to the DC area once again this week, heading to GW for a rematch with a Colonials team that already defeated the Rams once earlier this season.
The black and gold will return to the Stu Wednesday, March 2 for their final home game of the season, taking on the Davidson Wildcats on Senior Night.
