Rams use second half defense to best Explorers, 73-62

VCU (12-4, 5-2 A10) used a pair of scoring runs to bookend halftime and separate themselves en route to a 73-62 win against the Explorers of La Salle.

VCU trailed most of the first half before Senior big, Corey Douglas, hit a pair of free throws to take a 31-30 lead with 2:44 on the clock before break. Those free throws capped a 9-0 run for the Rams.

Douglas, who was honored for Senior Night before the game, finished with 6 points and 3 rebounds.

The Rams used the opening minutes of the second half to rattle off a 10-4 run, including 2 dunks from sophomore, Hason Ward.

Ward led the Rams with 9 rebounds to go with his career-high 13 point scoring performance.

Once again, Bones Hyland led scoring for the day with 24 points while shooting 50% from the field. The leading scorer for the Rams also connected on 3-6 shots from distance, and 11-12 from the free throw line.

Hyland also record 4 rebounds and 4 assist to go with his game-high scoring.

Overall, VCU won the rebounded game to the tune of 36-29.

VCU turned the ball over 17 times, a problem that continues to plague the Rams, which resulted in 17 points for La Salle.

The Explorers however turned the ball over 18 times leading to 22 points for the Rams.

Both VCU and La Salle shot the ball relatively successfully from the field as they hit on 45% and 43%, respectively.

But, it was the free throw line that separated the two as VCU hit on 21-26 for 81%. Whereas the Explorers were 12-17 for 71%.

Freshman point guard, Ace Baldwin, chipped in a 10 point, 6 rebound, 4 assist, and 4 steal performance for VCU.

Vince Williams was the only other Ram in double-digit scoring with 11 points and 3 rebounds.

VCU was expected to have a quick turnaround as they were scheduled to host Fordham on January 31st, but after the game Coach Mike Rhoades announced that the Sunday matchup was being postponed.

The next schedule game has VCU heading to Rhode Island on Wednesday, February 3rd. That game is set to tip at 7pm EST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
