VCU (14-5; 5-1 A10) has now won nine of its last ten games as the Rams powered past the Minutemen of UMASS, 83-55.
Through 15 minutes of the first half, the game had largely been a back-and-forth battle with the Minutemen holding onto a 2 point lead.
But, a 9-0 Rams run—extending to an 11-0 run after the first basket of the second half—opened up the game for the VCU defense to take hold.
Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, VCU held UMASS to just three field goals from the floor. The Minutemen would finish the second half with only 6 made field goals—none from range as they couldn't connect on any of their 11 attempts.
UMASS finished the night shooting just 29% from the floor, 16% from three, and 65% on 13-20 free throw attempts.
The Rams also rattled off a 12-2 run during a five minute stretch to push their lead out to 20 points at the under-12 timeout.
VCU finished the night with 53% shooting overall, 50% from range, and 76% from the stripe.
Despite having a 19-9 margin on the offensive glass, UMASS could only turn that into 9 second-chance points. VCU won the battle of the boards overall by a slim 41-40 margin.
Jalen DeLoach had a game-high in both points and rebounds with 19 and 12, respectively. This was the Sophomores second career double-double.
Fellow Sophomore, Nick Kern Jr, similarly had a memorable night as he scored a career-high 12 points on 5-8 shooting—including multiple highlight worthy dunks.
Zeb Jackson dished out a game-high 5 assists to go with his 12 points for the Rams. His 5 assist tied his career high set just early this month against Davidson.
Jayden Nunn put up 13 points behind 3-3 shooting from range for VCU.
Rounding out the double-digit scoring for the Rams was Brandon Johns, Jr., with 10 points to go with his 3 assists.
VCU will return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 as the head across town to take on local rival, Richmond. That game is set to tip at 7pm ET and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
