Marcus Evans, and #20 VCU, proved to be too much for the visiting Hornets from Alabama State as the Rams remain undefeated.
The win tonight secured the first 6-0 start in program history for VCU.
Evans scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the first half of action for the Rams—including scoring 8 of the final 10 points for the Rams before intermission.
The Senior guard hit back-to-back threes in the final two minutes of the first half and then hit one more three before being fouled on his next attempt from long range—he made all three free throws.
Overall, Evans shot 8-11 from the floor for 73% while also connecting on 5-7 on shots from deep.
Alabama State jumped out to an early lead, and led by as many as five points, before the first media timeout.
But, a three-pointer from Mike'L Simms (9pts, 3reb) put the Rams ahead 23-21 with 8:20 left to play in the first half. The Hornets would get no closer than that mark for the remainder of the game.
Simms triple would start a 16-2 run by the Rams, and effort made even more possible by 10 first half turnovers from the Hornets.
Alabama State ended the night with 16 turnovers resulting in 17 points for the Rams.
Freshman, Bones Hyland, was the only other Ram in double digit scoring tonight as the young guard chipped in 12 points.
Overall the VCU bench contributed 23 points.
Big-man, Marcus Santos-Silva, once again narrowly missed turning in a double-double with 9pts and 9 rebounds.
In the end, VCU shooting was just too much for the Hornets to rally back against.
The Rams shot the ball 47% from the floor on 25-53 shooting, while knocking down an impressive 12-22 from range for 55% for the game.
Tonights game marked the 140 consecutive sell-out at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
The Rams return to action Friday, November 29th, as they head to the Emerald Coast Classic to take on the Boilermakers from Purdue. That game is set to tip at 9:30PM and will be broadcast on CBSSN.
