Marcus Evans led the Rams with a team-high 17 points, but maybe none were as exclamatory as his three pointer with 33 seconds left that sealed the victory for VCU, 76-71, over the Dayton Flyers.
The starting point guard for the Rams, Evans, scored the final 7 points for the Rams while going 4-4 from the free throw line.
The game leading up to the final 33 seconds was slightly less smooth sailing for the Rams. Over 40 minutes the contest featured 12 lead changes and 22 ties.
With 4:08 left in the second half, the Flyers held a four point lead over the Rams. A layup by Sean Mobley and then two free throws by Isaac Vann would tie the game at 69 for the final time before Evans took over.
Mobley and Vann each contributed 9 points to the final box score, and grabbed 4 and 7 rebounds, respectively.
De'Riante Jenkins was the only other Ram tonight besides Evans that eclipsed the double-digit mark with 13 points. The scoring guard was also able to grab 7 rebounds and dish out 4 assists.
Dayton out-matched the Rams in the paint tonight to the tune of a 44-30 advantage.
But, the Rams recovered that ground by hitting 9-19 three pointers for 47%. An impressive number considering the Rams connected on 27-59 overall from the floor for 46%.
VCU relied on their bench for 20 over their points tonight, while Dayton's bench contributed just 9 points.
The Rams improve to 12-5 overall, while being 3-1 in A10 play.
VCU will return to action Saturday, January 19 as they host the Minutemen of UMASS.
That game is set to tip at 6:30pm EST.
