Recap: Rams bulldoze over Spiders in second half; cruise to 87-68 win

The first twenty minutes of basketball looked drastically different than the second twenty minutes if you were a Spiders fan tonight.

VCU (16-5; 6-2 A10) and the University of Richmond met for the 84th time tonight, and like 53 meetings before this evening, the Rams came out on top. Tonights win made it three-straight for VCU in the head-to-head series.

Before tip-off, Senior Issac Vann, was honored at half-court for passing the 1,000-Point career milestone.

Just before the Under-16 media timeout, Marcus Evans punctuated his 2,000th point by hitting a three-pointer despite being fouled—he also made the subsequent free throw. Evans ended the night with 9 points and 3 assists.

VCU jumped out to an early lead 33-20, and looked to hold all the momentum as the game moved towards the final media timeout of the first half.

But, Richmond used a 19-3 run to take a 39-36 lead with only thirty seconds left before the break.

Then, with only four seconds left on the clock, everything changed for the Spiders and the tide turned again towards the Rams, as Bones Hyland hit his fourth three-pointer of the first half.

The freshman guard, who has made a name for himself as of late, finished the night with a team-high 15 points on 5-6 shooting from distance.

Overall, the Rams shot a combined 10-21 from long range for a spectacular 48%.

Richmond, on the other hand, struggled to connect from the outside as they finished 3-14 for 21%.

The VCU bench didn't make things any easier for the Richmond as they outscored the Spider to the tune of a 36-8 margin.

The Rams also won the battle at the boards with a 38-34 differential.

But perhaps the biggest number of the night was the 24-8 run the Rams went on in the second half.

Big men, Marcus Santos-Silva (15pts) and Corey Douglas (11pts), combined for 16 of those rebounds—they had 8 a piece.

De'Riante Jenkins and Vann also got into the double-digit game with 14 points and 11 points, respectively.

VCU returns to action Friday, January 31st, as the head to Rhode Island to take on the Rams. That game is set to tip at 7pm and will be broadcast on either ESPN2/U.
