VCU opened Atlantic 10 play in style by handing in-state rival George Mason a classic woodshed beatdown at the Siegel Center, 71-47.

VCU locked down on the Patriots all night long, holding George Mason to 32% shooting from the field while turning Mason over 22 times in the win.

On offense the Rams got yet another big night from senior guard Melvin Johnson who led all players with 22 points on the night. Johnson saw some second half help from big man Ahmed Hamdy who dropped a quick 16 points for the black and gold and grabbed eight rebounds in 17 minutes of action.

Korey Billbury added 10 points for the Rams, rounding out VCU's group of double-digit scorers while grabbing six rebounds against a strong rebounding group in George Mason.

The Rams won the battle of the glass, 42-40.

JeQuan Lewis led all players with six assists in the win. The Rams dished 12 dimes and had just six turnovers on the night.

The win moves VCU to 9-5 on the season and 1-0 in Atlantic 10 play.

VCU will hit the road for a quick two-game road trip this week, first taking on the Hawks of Saint Joseph's Tuesday night followed by a Saturday game at Saint Louis.

VCU will return to Richmond Wednesday January 13 to host the Rams of Fordham University.
