It was an unusual home-opener, but that didn't stop VCU (3-2) from playing their style of basketball as the Rams ran away with a 60-42 win over the Mountaineers of Mount Saint Mary's.
Freshman, Ace Baldwin, opened the game with two assist, both to big man, Levi Stockard III for the Rams to take the early lead.
Stockard ended the afternoon with 8pts on 4-6 shooting from the floor.
Baldwin scored 2pts to go with his game-high 5 assist. He also tied a team-high 5 rebounds in his 24 minutes.
VCU's defense held the Mountaineers to just over 5 minutes without a field goal to start the game, but the Mountaineers responded quickly thereafter with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game.
But VCU didn't stay down long. The Rams rattled off a 22-2 run behind 4 field goals from range, and another "old-fashioned" three point play from Corey Douglas.
Sophomore Bones Hyland was responsible for 3 of those triples, while Vince Williams contributed the other long range bomb.
Hyland finished the day with team-high 14 points to go with his 3 rebound, 3 assist, and 2 steals.
Williams (6pts/3reb/3ast) earned his first start of the young season as KeShawn Curry is listed game-to-game with shoulder injury.
Coming out of the locker room with a 37-20 lead, the Rams were able to get some good minutes for the many young, and new, players.
The VCU bench contributed 25 points on the afternoon as 10 different Rams found their names on the box score.
Mount Saint Mary's struggled all afternoon to get their offense going as they turned the ball over 23 times leading to 26 points for VCU. The Rams only coughed the ball up 13 times in 40 minutes.
