After clinching a share of the Atlantic 10 regular season title, the Rams traveled to Dayton in attempts to gain sole possession. The last game of the regular season also marked the first time the teams would meet this year. The game lived up to the hype and needed additional time but the Dayton Flyers were not gonna lose on their senior night and held off the Rams in overtime, 68-67.

In a game that saw 9 lead changes, VCU opened up first, scoring 9 points before the Flyers would get on the scoreboard. But the Ram’s lead wouldn’t last.

Dayton, feeding off the energy of a packed UD Arena, went on a 10-0 run with just more than 5 minutes left in the first half. Dayton led by as many as 5 in the first half before VCU Sophomore Justin Tillman helped the Rams regain momentum.

Tillman dominated on the boards, grabbing 21 on the night. 8 of those came in the first half and were huge for the Rams as it allowed them to enter halftime with a 2 point lead.

Four Rams would find themselves in double digits scoring in the game. Tillman and Junior Mo Alie-Cox with 12, Seniors Melvin Johnson and Korey Billbury both with 16.

Defense was on display from both teams. For a handful of minutes in the second half, the game saw both teams exchange just one bucket each. VCU turned the ball over 15 times compared to Dayton’s 12.

Dayton Junior Scoochie Smith was a thorn in the Rams side all night. Smith scored 29 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists on the night.

This puts VCU at 22-9 (14-4) heading into the Atlantic 10 conference tournament in Brooklyn, NY.
