VCU looked to push their 8 game winning streak to 9 as they hosted Duquesne on Wednesday night at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The Dukes entered Richmond with a 12-6 overall record and hope to silence the sold out crowd.
VCU holds the series record between the two teams at 4-0 with help from Doug Brooks and Mo Alie-Cox. Both Rams led their team with 16 points on the night. Justin Tillman would be right behind them with 15 points on the night. In all, five Rams would end the night in double figures—Brooks, Alie-Cox, Tillman, Melvin Johnson, and JeQuan Lewis.
The first half would end much like VCU's previous matchup against UR—Mo Alie-Cox putting down a dunk that would bring the sellout crowd to its feet. This would be the cap on a 13 point VCU lead, despite 22 total fouls being called in the first half——13 and 9 for the Rams and Dukes respectively. TySean Powell, Darius Lewis, and Jordan Robinson would all pick up three fouls before halftime. The Rams would take advantage hitting 13 of their 14 free throws and heading to the break with a 44-31 lead.
Duquesne started the second half on a 5-0 run before Michael Gilmore converted a basket and free throw after being fouled. VCU would grow their largest lead to 26 points with just over 7 minutes to play in the game. Doug Brooks would break out an explosive second half in which he would shoot 3-5 for 11 points. He would end the night with an efficient 16 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals in 26 minutes. Justin Tillman would also use the second half to net all of his 15 points and 7 rebounds.
The Dukes were able to cut the lead back to 15 points, but would never get closer. VCU was able to hold Duquesne scoreless over the final 2:42 minutes, and with about two minutes left VCU would sub its bench to cruise to the 93-71 victory.
The Rams were, once again, without Junior Jordan Burgess. Coach Wade hopes to have Burgess back by the George Washington game on Saturday, February 6th.
The win marks the second year in a row that the Rams have started A-10 play, 6-0.
