Recap: VCU falls at home to Rhode Island, 65-56

VCU (12-4, 2-1) was just never able to get it going this afternoon as they dropped their first conference loss of the season to Rhode Island, 65-56.

Marcus Santos-Silva scored 7 of VCU's first 12 points en route to his 6th double-double of the season. He capped the night off with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Despite the big man impressive performance, VCU never actually led at any point in the afternoon matchup. Aside from an early 9-9 tie game, VCU struggled to keep URI within striking.

Back-to-back baskets from Santos-Silva would pull VCU within one point of Rhode Island with 6:46 remaining in the game, but a URI layup, followed by 7 points from the free throw line, pushed them out of range with the clock dwindling.

Rhode Island finished the night shooting 86% from the free throw line on 19 of 22 attempts.

VCU did force URI into committing 15 turnovers, but the home team was only able to turn that into 14 points on the night.

Seniors, Marcus Evans and De'Riante Jenkins, were the only other VCU players to score in double digits.

Evans tallied 11 points to go with his 4 assists;.

Jenkins put up an additional 14 points, a team-high, to go with his 6 rebounds, 2 assist, and 2 steals.

Todays loss ended a 21-game home win streak for VCU.

The Rams will return to action Tuesday, January 14th, as they head to Ohio to take on the #15 Dayton Flyers. That game is scheduled to tip at 8pm EST and will be broadcast on CBSSN.
