Recap: VCU pushes Purdue to the limit; fall short 59-56

After starting the season 6-0 for the first time in school history, VCU took the show on the road to Florida to take part in the Emerald Coast Classic, opening their trip with a game against Purdue. Despite pushing the Boilermakers to the finish, the Rams fell just short in the end, 59-56.

In the first half, it was all about defense. But it was a slow start for both teams as it took more than 9 minutes before either team saw double digit scoring.

It was also a sloppy first half. Both teams combined for 24 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, unfortunately VCU owned 14 of them.

A bright spot was the footwork and scoring from junior Marcus Santos-Silva. The starting forward went 5-5 in the first half and ended the night with 19 points on 8-10 shooting while grabbing 2 rebounds.

Both teams found their bearing in the second half. VCU turned the ball over half as many times as they did in the first half.

The black and gold connected on 19 of 43 shots from the field shooting 44% in the loss.

Purdue won the battle on the boards as well, out rebounding VCU 32-24.

VCU will play #17 Tennessee Saturday at 4pm.
