Less than 30 minutes after the announced commitment of Roosevelt Wheeler, former Richmond Spider freshman Jason Nelson has announced his commitment to VCU, marking the 3rd local talent to return home via the transfer portal to join Ryan Odom's first VCU roster.
Nelson transfers to VCU from cross-town rival University of Richmond, where he started 26 games and put up 8 PPG and 2 APG in 32 games last season as a freshman.
He was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year by HoopsHD and picked up 2 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week accolades.
Nelson, along with recent VCU commit Roosevelt Wheeler, helped lead John Marshall High School to a state title in 2020. His father play basketball at Virginia Union and helped that team to the 2005 NCAA Division II championship.
