After one of the worst defensive halves of the season, VCU rebounded with one of their best to take down Charleston on the road, 76-71.
The black and gold found themselves trailing the Cougars 46-38 at halftime, trying to keep pace with the red hot Charleston shooters who connected on 69.2% of their first half threes against a Rams squad allowing less than half that on the season. VCU came out of the locker rooms closer resembling the VCU team that has been one of the best defensive units in the country since last season however, limiting Charleston to just 26.8% from the field in the second stanza to outscore their CAA opponent 38-25 over the second half in the win.
Charleston finished 50% from deep on the night, but VCU managed 12 more shot attempts overall thanks to six fewer turnovers and six-rebound advantage on the evening.
Junior star, Marcus Santos-Silva, led VCU on the glass with a team hight 11 rebounds to go with his 17 points in yet another double-double for the Taunton, MA native. He was one of three Rams to finish with double-digit scoring, joining De'Riante Jenkins and Marcus Evans who chipped in 16 each.
Evans had a bit of a bounce-back effort in the win after a rough scoring stretch for the senior over his last four contests, connecting on 50% of his attempts from the field and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw stripe. The senior guard added two assists and a steal in the win.
Jenkins added two assists of his own a four rebounds for the Rams.
Sophomore Vince WIlliams led VCU with a team-high four assists in his 16 minutes off the bench.
VCU has been improved from distance all season and finished the game a solid 35% from deep, connecting on seven of their 20 three-point attempts. The Rams turned the ball over just nine times in the victory.
The win comes via VCU's first road game of the season in what will be a two-game road trip that wraps up Saturday at Wichita State, a team the Rams defeated last season 70-54 at the Siegel Center.
The Rams return home Sunday, December 29 for a home contest against Loyola Marlyand, VCU's last home game of 2019 as well as their last game in their non-conference schedule.
