Sanders Named CAA Co-Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – Following a night in which he set career-highs for points and rebounds, Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Larry Sanders (Fort Pierce, Fla.) was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week Monday. Sanders will share the honor with Drexel’s Tramayne Hawthorne.

Sanders had a breakout game in the Rams’ 59-54 victory over Hampton Dec 27, booking personal bests of 21 points and 19 rebounds. He also blocked four shots on the evening and provided two clutch buckets in the closing minutes to preserve the VCU victory. Sanders’ 19 rebounds are the most for a Ram since 2002.

Through 12 games, Sanders is averaging 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.1 blocks, while shooting .585 (48-of-82) from the floor.

Sanders’ citation marks the fourth straight week a VCU player has won a CAA Weekly honor. Senior Eric Maynor (Raeford, N.C.) and sophomore Joey Rodriguez (Oviedo, Fla.) have each collected a Player of the Week award, while freshman Bradford Burgess (Midlothian, Va.) has twice been named Rookie of the Week.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3 when they travel to Newark, Del. for a CAA tilt with Delaware at 4:30 p.m.
