RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Joey Rodriguez (Oviedo, Fla.), whose slick shooting helped the Rams to a pair of victories, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Co-Player of the Week. He shares the honor with Greg Washington of Hofstra.
Rodriguez averaged 18.5 points and established new single-game highs in points and 3-pointers.
The 5-11 guard nailed a personal-best 6-of-7 3-pointers and scored a career-high 20 points to lift VCU to a 66-50 win over William & Mary Dec. 6 in Williamsburg. Two days earlier, Rodriguez poured in 17 points in a 79-62 rout of Western Michigan.
In two games, Rodriguez knocked down 9-of-14 3-point attempts, a .643 clip. He shot .667 (12-of-18) overall. He also averaged 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per contest.
Through eight games, Rodriguez is averaging 11.6 points, 2.8 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.3 rebounds, while shooting .511 from 3-point range.
This is the second consecutive week a Ram has taken down the league’s weekly honor. Senior Eric Maynor was named Player of the Week Dec. 1.
Rodriguez and VCU return to the floor on Saturday, Dec. 13 when it meets cross-town rival Richmond at the Robins Center at 2 p.m.
