Four-star point guard Nyk Lewis has committed to VCU, becoming the first high school pledge under new head coach Phil Martelli Jr. Lewis, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound guard from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., is ranked No. 50 nationally and No. 7 among point guards in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports.
Lewis initially committed to Xavier in August 2024 but reopened his recruitment after head coach Sean Miller departed for Texas in March 2025. Following his decommitment, he drew interest from several programs, including Iowa, Vanderbilt, Indiana, Seton Hall, and Texas.
At Gonzaga, Lewis was named the 2024-25 District of Columbia MaxPreps Player of the Year. He also played for Team Takeover on the AAU circuit, a program known for producing high-level talent.
Nyk brings a physical, attacking style to the point guard position. He uses his strong frame to finish through contact and create separation in the half court. He’s a confident ball-handler who thrives in ball screens, able to read defenses and make plays for himself or teammates. Lewis plays with a competitive edge, often setting the tone on both ends of the floor. Defensively, he’s tough at the point of attack, using his strength and quickness to disrupt opposing guards. He’s not just a scorer - he’s a floor general who looks comfortable running an offense, making him a strong fit for the kind of team-first system Phil Martelli Jr. is expected to build at VCU.
Lewis' commitment marks a significant addition to VCU's roster as Coach Martelli Jr. begins to shape the program's future. Martelli, who was hired in March 2025 after leading Bryant University to an NCAA Tournament appearance, is tasked with building upon VCU's recent success.
