Odds are that's one of the first times you've heard anything about the rising senior this summer. Brandenberg has been one of the least talked about players, floating below the radar that seems to only catch leading scorers Treveon Graham and Juvonte Reddic as well as the new faces set to hit the court this upcoming season.
Lost in the hype is the fact VCU returns a very capable guard who averaged double digits last season -- 10.4 ppg, good for third best of all returning players -- a player who dropped two 20-plus point games as a freshman (and let's not forget that block on 6'8 FSU senior, Chris Singleton, to seal VCU's Sweet 16 win in 2011), a feat no other current Ram could accomplish in their introductory seasons at VCU.
Ram fans have given him the nickname, Superberg, but the Shadowman may be a more appropriate super hero moniker for the Ohio native, as he is generally a top three scorer on any given night, but rarely the headline grabber. Brandenberg led VCU in scoring just two games last year -- a 22-point performance in 25 minutes at Duquesne and a 21-point output in just 22 minutes at Charlotte, his only 20-plus games of the season. He was huge for VCU in their win over then No.19 Memphis (5-5 from 3-point land) and posted 18 points in a comeback win at Xavier in 25 minutes, scoring the final six points in a 4-point win for the Rams. He is one of the main scorers for a VCU team that ranked 11th nationally this past season but manages to escape most headlines and preseason chatter.
Don't be surprised if on a team loaded with guard talent, Brandenberg reaches his full potential and finally gets his due in his "contract year" at VCU.
