VCU back on track with win against Appalachian St., 85-72

After a back and forth first half that saw the lead change over 10 times, VCU (4-3) settled in on defense and was able to beat visiting Appalachian State, 85-72.

Both teams traded a pair of turnovers to start the game before VCU burst out to an 8-0 lead in the next 30 seconds forcing ASU to call a timeout and regroup.

Turnovers were the difference in tonights match-up as VCU was able to net 21 points off of 19 ASU turnovers.

VCU would only turn the ball over 10 times, but gave up only 4 points off those mistakes.

De'Riante Jenkins scored 10 of his 13 total points in the first 5:53 of the first half. He ended the night with 3-3 shooting from long range while dishing out 3 assists and grabbing 3 steals.

ASU missed only 3 shots in the final 10:10 of the first half as they surged back to take their first lead of the game at 5:03 mark after Isaac Johnson hit a pair of free throws to make it 31-29.

Johnson would end the night with 10 points on 5-5 shooting from the field.

Ronshad Shabazz would lead the Mountaineers with 19 points.

The Rams would open the second half on a 12-5 run.

Seniors, Jonathan Williams and Justin Tillman, would score the next 13 points for the Rams. Williams with a 7-0 run, followed by a 6-0 run by Tillman.

Tillman scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down 6 total rebounds. The big man was also a perfect 2-2 from beyond the three-point line.

Williams accounted for a game-high 7 assists. VCU would end the night with 18 total assist as a team. The senior point guard also scored 18 points while going 4-6 from downtown. Prior to tonight, Williams made three 3ptrs all last season.

VCU shot 10-20 on the night from long range despite the absence of Issac Vann and Malik Crowfield. Both were sidelined with ankle injuries.

Khris Lane was the only other Ram to score in double figures with 17 points. He would match Tillman by grabbing 6 rebounds for a team-high.

The Rams will return to action Saturday, Dec. 2nd at 7pm as they are scheduled to take on the Monarchs of Old Dominion. The game will be televised on MASN.
