VCU bounces back in win against GW, 87-63

VCU (12-8, 4-3) led wire-to-wire against GW as the Rams bounced back from back-to-back losses with a much needed win, 87-63.

Four Rams found their way into the double-digit scoring column.

Justin Tillman and De'Riante Jenkins both netted a team-high 18 points.

Tillman also pulled down 8 rebounds while shooting 7-11 from the floor for 64%.

Jenkins shot an impressive 5 of 8 from the floor, and 4-6 from three for 67%. The sophomore guard was also a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

Jonathan Williams scored 14 points on 6-9 shooting. He also dished out 4 assists on the afternoon.

Sean Mobley, making his first career start, led the team with a career-high 8 assists. Six of those came in the opening four  minutes of the game. He would finish the day with shooting 2-2 from the free throw line for 2 points while also grabbing 3 rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

Joining Mobley on the stat sheet was fellow freshman, Marcus Santos-Silva with 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Santos-Silva added 4 rebounds as well.

Yuta Watanabe led the Colonials with a game-high 19 points.

Terry Nolan, Jr was the only other GW player to break into double-digits with 15 points.

VCU would shoot 55% from the floor overall after knocking down an impressive 16-26 from the floor in the first half.

Despite cold shooting in previous games, the Rams appeared to have warmed up a little from beyond the three point line going 7-19 for 37%.

The Rams also knocked down 16-18 from the free throw line for 89%.

VCU's bench outscored the Colonials by a 27-5 margin. All but two of the thirteen players in today's VCU lineup would score.

The Rams also out-rebounded GW to the tune of 34-22. VCU used 12 offensive rebounds to help tally 18 second-chance points. By contrast, the Colonials would not score any points of second chances.

The attacking offense of VCU would lead to 44 points in the paint during today's contest. GW would only accumulate 26 points in the paint.

The Rams will return to action Tuesday, January 23rd as they travel to take on the Billikens of Saint Louis. This game will be broadcast on CBS SportsNet and is scheduled to tip-off at 9:00pm EST.
