For the second time this season VCU took down a top-100 team in front of 13,000+ opposing fans, tonight doing so with a 80-66 domination of the Dayton Flyers in Ohio.
The black and gold put together one of their most balanced performances of the season, holding the high scoring Flyers to 47% shooting on the night while connecting on 49% of their own shots and a respectable 38% from long range.
VCU spread the love early, getting five or more points from five players including eight points off the bench from Melvin Johnson. After a two-point first half showing, VCU got the ball to Juvonte Reddic early and often in the second, and the senior big rewarded the team with 16 of his 18 total points to finish the game in just 14 second half minutes and added a game-high seven rebounds on the night. Briante Weber added 12 second half points of his own and finished with 18 to match Reddic.
But it wasn't just the experience that closed the game out for VCU. Freshman, JeQuan Lewis, was deadly late, connecting on all three of his second half three-pointers, two of which came within a minutes time to expand the VCU lead from nine to a comfortable 15.
Treveon Graham added 14 points on 6-17 shooting and added six rebounds in the win.
Havoc also made it's first appearance at UD Arena since the Rams last won in Dayton in the First 4 bracket of their magical Final 4 journey in 2011. VCU forced 18 Dayton turnovers and turned them into 28 points. The Rams had just seven turnovers of their own and were as solid at the free throw line as they were in taking care of the ball, connecting on 11 of their 13 free throw attempts.
The win moves VCU to 15-4 on the season and 3-1 in Atlantic play heading into a tough road matchup against the La Salle Explorers, the one A-10 team to win at VCU last season.
The Rams return to the Siegel Center on January 29th where they will host the Rams of Fordham University in a 7PM tip.
