For the 5th time in 6 years the Rams were able to get a bye for the first round of the tournament. They faced Northeastern who defeated William & Mary the night before. Last time these two teams met earlier this season the Rams squeaked by with a three point victory, this time the margin would not be as close as the Rams would win and advance with a 75-65 win.
Coming into the game, no one besides Bradford Burgess had scored more than 5 points in a CAA Tournament game but that would all change. Sophomore Rob Brandenberg played one of his bees games in recent memory at one point hitting three straight three pointers. He ended with 19 on the night.
In their first ever CAA Tournament meeting, the Rams found themselves tied at the break with the Huskies at 26 but VCU came out int he 2nd half determined to take control.
Freshman Treveon Graham also contributed big for VCU against Northeastern. He scored 16 points. Graham went 6-9 from the field in his CAA Tournament debut.
VCU's defense created 25 turnovers where VCU was able to capitalize with 23 points off of those turnovers.
VCU's bench killed Northeastern's bench in points with 46 to 4. The Rams shot well from downtown going 37 % on the night from behind the arc. VCU shot poorly from the charity stripe hitting just 14 of 31 on the night.
The Rams will take on the winner of the Georgia State vs George Mason.
