VCU dropped their A10 home opener to the visiting Rhode Island Rams.
Prior to todays loss, VCU (9-3, 2-1) was riding a 7-game win streak.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the first half and went into the locker room tied at 40.
Rhode Island started the second half on a 6-0 run, but back-to-back three's from Bones Hyland got VCU back into the mix.
Hyland added two free throws and then a layup on the subsequent two plays to give him 10 straight points for VCU.
He would end the night with 24 points and 5 rebounds.
URI jumped out to a 12 point lead in the second half behind back-to-back triples that came as a result of VCU turnovers.
Rhode Island turned 16 VCU turnovers into 21 points on the night.
VCU only managed to net 12 points from 19 URI turnovers.
Rhode Island out-rebounded VCU 41 to 26. With the second half margin at a stark, 28-8.
KeShawn Curry hit a three-pointer with just 1:10 left on the game clock to pull VCU within 9 points, but the URI was too much to catch in the final 60 seconds.
Curry was the only other VCU Ram to enter double digit points with 11 points
VCU returns to action on Wednesday, January 13th as they travel to Foggy Bottom to take on the Colonials of George Washington. That game is set to tip at 2pm EST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
