Three point shooting proved too much as VCU (2-1) fell to in-state foe, UVA, 76-67.
Khris Lane was critical in getting the Rams started this evening—scoring 7 of the first 9 points for the Rams—including sinking a three pointer. Lane would end the night scoring 12 points and grabbing 5 rebounds.
Issac Vann picked up where Lane would leave off. Vann would score 6 straight field goals for VCU, including two back-to-back three pointers to cut the VCU deficit to 5pts with 5:51 to play in the first half. He would end the night with a team-leading 19 points while shooting 8 of 10 from the floor. He also grabbed 5 rebounds.
But, the three point line giveth and taketh away. While VCU was only able to connect on 4 of their 14 attempts in the first half for 29%, UVA managed to bury 6 of their first 12 threes.
Kyle Guy would lead UVA with 29 points on 5 of 9 shooting from range, including his final three which came with only 41 seconds left in the second half. The shot would push UVA into a three possession lead, and just too much to overcome for the Rams
Senior Jonathan Williams was the only other Ram in double-digit scoring with 14 points—12 of which came in the second half of play. It was also the second straight game that he would tally 8 assists.
Grabbing 8 rebounds, Justin Tillman led the Rams on the glass. He also contributed 4 points against a tough UVA front court line.
Turnovers at the wrong time would haunt the Rams all night. VCU committed 12 turnovers that would lead to 16 points for the Cavaliers.
Mike'l Simms would connect on a three pointer with 8:02 left on the clock to bring the Rams within 2 points, but the UVA lead would never go less that that on the evening.
Next up for the Rams is a trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational where they will face off against the Marquette Golden Eagles. That game is set for Monday, November 20th, 2017. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30pm.
