VCU falls to top-seeded Rhode Island in A10 quarterfinals, 76-67

VCU senior, Justin Tillman, secured his 18th double-double of the season with a game-high 23 and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome #1 seeded Rhode Island as VCU fell, 76-67.

That is the most double-doubles in one season since Bernard Hopkins tallied 18 during the 1995-96 campaign.

Rhode Island used 11-22 three point shooting to respond to any momentum VCU was able to build.

The game saw 11 lead changes and 7 ties as the two Rams squads battled back and forth.

Starting at the 13:05 mark in the second half, VCU used a 13-6 run to take the lead on a pair of free throws from VCU Senior Jonathan Williams.

During the next seven minutes all 13 points were scored by the senior class of VCU. Khris Lane scored two of his 7 points on the day, Williams added 6 points, and Tillman put up 5 points.

Williams ended the day with 6 points while dishing out 7 assists.

Lane record a clean 7 points and 7 rebounds for VCU.

But, a three by Jeff Dowtin at the 5:40 mark gave URI the go-ahead 61-59 lead.

URI would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.

Dowtin led URI with 18 points; including 3-4 from deep. He was 7-10 overall from the floor.

Going into the final 51 seconds of action, URI was only shooting 3-11 from the free throw line, but was able to close the game shooting 8-8 from the charity stripe to ice the victory.

Issac Vann contributed 10 points and 8 rebound in the afternoon matchup. He was 4-8 from the floor.

De'Riante Jenkins was the final VCU player to see double-digit scoring on the afternoon with 16pts, including 3-6 shooting from downtown.

This marks the first time since joining the A10 conference that VCU has not played in the final championship game.

VCU will now await conference tournaments around the country to end so that they can learn what the post-season has in store for the Rams.
