VCU kicks-off season with 73-56 win over Manhattan

VCU (1-0) opened the 2022-2023 season with a jolt as the Rams welcomed the Jaspers of Manhattan to life on Broad St.

After netting three of their first four attempts from range, the Rams jumped out to a 21-10 lead.

Included in that stretch was a triple from transfer, Brandon Johns, Jr. to start the scoring for the Rams.

He ended the night with 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor, and 5 rebounds.

In a brief stretch of basketball that seemed to go the way for the Jaspers offense, they rattled off their own 9-0 run to cut the lead to just 2 points.

Baskets from Jalen DeLoach and Ace Baldwin, respectively, got the Rams back on track and kicked off an 11-2 run.

From there, the Rams rocketed out to the 48-30 halftime lead.

VCU started the second half shooting 4-7 from the floor, including back-to-back layups from Baldwin.

The next ten minutes went ice cold for the Rams, as Manhattan held VCU to 0-8 shooting from the floor.

Layups from Johns at the 6-minute mark, and DeLoach at the 4:36-minute mark were the only two field goals for VCU in the final 16-minutes of the second half.
