VCU (1-0) opened the 2022-2023 season with a jolt as the Rams welcomed the Jaspers of Manhattan to life on Broad St.
After netting three of their first four attempts from range, the Rams jumped out to a 21-10 lead.
Included in that stretch was a triple from transfer, Brandon Johns, Jr. to start the scoring for the Rams.
He ended the night with 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor, and 5 rebounds.
In a brief stretch of basketball that seemed to go the way for the Jaspers offense, they rattled off their own 9-0 run to cut the lead to just 2 points.
Baskets from Jalen DeLoach and Ace Baldwin, respectively, got the Rams back on track and kicked off an 11-2 run.
From there, the Rams rocketed out to the 48-30 halftime lead.
VCU started the second half shooting 4-7 from the floor, including back-to-back layups from Baldwin.
The next ten minutes went ice cold for the Rams, as Manhattan held VCU to 0-8 shooting from the floor.
Layups from Johns at the 6-minute mark, and DeLoach at the 4:36-minute mark were the only two field goals for VCU in the final 16-minutes of the second half.
Overall, the Rams shot 23-54 from the floor (43%) and 8-24 from range (33%).
DeLoach grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds to go with his 10 points.
The Rams out-rebounded the Jaspers to the tune of a 33-30 margin.
Manhattan turned the ball over 27 times in forty minutes of play tonight—VCU took advantage and turned that into 17 points.

Baldwin's knocked down a team-high 15-points to go with his game-high 9 assists.
Jamir Watkins was the only other Ram in double-digit scoring with 13 points.
