VCU lands Providence transfer Jimmy Nichols Jr.

VCU landed its first commitment from the transfer portal this offseason with the announcement from Jimmy Nichols Jr. that he would be joining the Rams. Jimmy is a 6-8, 220 pound forward with excellent shooting skills (last year he shot over 40% from beyond the arc, and 86% from the free throw line).

This commitment fills one of two spots technically open on the roster (with the recent departure of Brendan Medley-Bacon, and the departure of Tre Clark back in March). It's likely that VCU will have a 3rd roster spot open after a highly anticipated announcement from Bones Hyland of his departure for the NBA, expected in the next few days.

Jimmy was at one time recruited by VCU, and was a teammate of current Ram Jarren McAllister. Footage of their performance together can be seen here:

Jimmy missed a portion of the season last year with Providence, after suffering an eye injury related to a car accident (played 16 games). He also received a medical redshirt his sophomore season with the Friars due to a foot injury (played 5 games). This indicates that Nichols will have 2 years of eligibility, potentially 3 given the COVID-related eligibility changes.
