The entire country got a good idea of how good basketball is in the city of Richmond Thursday night as the University of Richmond Spiders got the final say in the first meeting of the 2012-2013 season over the Rams.
VCU didn't take their first lead until the 2nd half after what was an almost evenly fought first half that ended with VCU down by three despite the Rams leading scorer, Sophomore Treveon Graham, failing to connect on a single bucket.
The difference maker tonight was the three ball. The Spiders pulled the trigger ten more times than the Rams, 27 compared to our 17, and connected on 12 of them while the Rams struggled only hitting 3.
Other than that, the two schools were pretty much tied in every other category. U of R had 6 steals compared to VCUs 5 and VCU out rebounded the Spiders 38-37. Both teams turned the ball over 13 times, which is usually a stat that the Rams win.
The Rams gave up an 8 point lead right before the end of regulation after Richmond kept hitting three after three finally nailing a long one with just 1.4 seconds in regulation, giving Richmond momentum into the extra session.
Once the Spiders had momentum, they were able to capitalize on it outscoring VCU in overtime 17-5.
Junior Juvonte Reddic led all Rams in scoring with 20 points and despite waiting until the second half for his first points, Graham was right behind him with 15 points. Freshman, Melvin Johnson, certainly was a bright spot for VCU scoring 12 points including one acrobatic, one hander in the paint while double teamed.
VCU will host LaSalle on Saturday for an 8pm tip off at The Stu and will face a team that just handed Butler their first conference loss.
