VCU makes it 6-straight as Rams handle Explorers

VCU (9-4; 2-0 A10) extended their winning streak to six-in-row after taking their defense on tour to Philadelphia to rattle the Explorers of La Salle, 65-66.

The home squad Explorers were without their leading scoring, Josh Nickelberry (11.9 ppg), as well as their leading assist maker, Jhamir Brickus (9.5 ppg/2.8 apg).

The Rams welcomed back freshmen, Jayden Nunn and Jimmy Nichols, Jr., after missing several games for health protocols.

Overall, 10 Rams took the floor in action tonight—with everyone who saw action scoring at least one field goal.

VCU's bench outscored the bench of La Salle, 35-23, which included a team-high 17 points from Marcus Tsohonis on 5-6 shooting from range.

For a Rams team that has had to rely on their defense more than their hot shooting this season, the VCU managed to score their highest total of the season behind 42% team-shooting from distance.

Vince Williams and Nunn were the only other Rams to hit triples—with both draining a pair.

Williams ended the night with 16 points and 6 rebounds; Nunn dropped in 9 points on his first night back.

The Rams also won the turnover battle. The Explorers coughed the ball up 19 times, while the Rams only committed 8 over 40 minutes of action.

VCU was efficient in channeling those 19 La Salle turnovers into 30 points.

Hason Ward (13pts/6reb) and Jalen DeLoach (9pts/7reb) worked the paint for the Rams and contributed 22 of the 38 points scored down low.

The win today means that VCU has now started the season with a 4-0 true-road record.

The Rams are also now a perfect 6-0 since Ace Baldwin's return to the VCU roster.

Baldwin dished out a team-high 6 assists and 3 steals to go with his 7 points.

The Rams will return to action Tuesday, January 11th, as they host the Colonials of George Washington. That game is set to tip at 7pm EST.
