It wasn't always pretty but at the end of the day the black and gold Rams took out the Fordham version of Ram, 75-58, in VCU's Atlantic 10 opener.
The VCU Rams threatened to blowout the Fordham Rams early but due to some very hot and cold play, allowed Tom Pecora's squad to pull within four points late in the first half, then within one early in the second before VCU used their extra gear to stretch the lead back to double digits where they would lead rather comfortably for the final nine minutes of play.
The Rams had ample opportunity to bury Fordham throughout the second half but were an ice-cold 12-26 from the free throw stripe during the second half of play.
Seniors Treveon Graham and Briante Weber led VCU with 14 points and seven rebounds each, both team-highs. Weber added six steals to move into a tie for fifth on the NCAA's all-time steals list.
VCU had 21 steals as a team and turned over a very turnover prone Fordham squad, 28 times in the win.
The black and gold Rams held Fordham to 35.1% shooting from the field and just 4-23 from beyond the three point arc. VCU hit 49.1% of their shots but were a rather cold 7-of-22 from distance.
VCU turned the ball over an uncharacteristic 17 times themselves. Heading into this afternoon's matchup the Rams ranked seventh nationally in offensive turnover percentage.
Bronx natives, Melvin Johnson and Terry Larrier, combined for 17 points in their return to their hometown. Johnson was an un-Johnson 1-6 from range but hit all three of his attempts inside the arc to finish 4-9 on the afternoon. Larrier was 3-8 for the Rams and finished 2-5 from deep.
Mo Alie-Cox finished with eight points himself on 3-5 shooting and added five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block for VCU.
Red-shirt sophomore starter, Jordan Burgess, missed today's game with an ankle injury.
The win moves the Rams to 11-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. VCU will return to the Stu to host red-hot A-10 newcomer, Davidson (10-2, 1-0), who'll return to the Siegel Center for the first time since routing VCU 77-62 in the first round of the 2005 NIT.
