The Rams would use steely resolve and defensive intensity to fuel turnovers that would ultimately lead to a 81-70 win over the visiting Princeton Tigers.
It looked like Princeton had picked up right where they left off after winning their last game by 60 points. The Tigers came out and rattled off a furious 16-0 run to shock the Rams.
JeQuan Lewis (25pts, 12ast) would knock down two free throws, but it wasn’t until De’Riante Jenkins (5pts) hit a three at the 13:19 minute mark that the Rams would get their first field-goal from the floor.
VCU would chip away at the lead for the next 10 minutes, but couldn’t seem to get closer than 7 points.
However, a Jenkins steal and dunk, followed by a Mo Alie-Cox (15pts, 4rec) steal and dunk on the subsequent play were part of a 12-2 run to end the half for the Rams. Lewis would contribute 5 points during that run to tie the game at 39 leading into the half.
VCU used 5 steals and 2 blocks to fuel their defense intensity in the first half—Princeton had 15 turnovers at the half and 19 on the night.
Lewis would have a game-high 14 points, 4 assist at the half while shooting a perfect 3-3 from three, and 4-4 from the free throw line.
A Doug Brooks three point at the 18:10 mark of the second half would give the Rams their first lead of the game, 44-41.
From there the game would change hands 7 times with 10 ties total on the night.
With 4:36 on the clock, Lewis led a fast break that would find senior Jordan Burgess open for the three pointer in the corner to take the 67-64 lead.
A three pointer by Samir Doughty at the 3:50 mark would give the Rams a 70-64 lead—one they would retain for the remainder of the evening.
The Rams improve to 6-1 on the season and will take on Illinois this Saturday, December 3rd at 3:00PM in Miami, Florida. That game will be broadcast on CBSSN.
