After climbing back into the ranks at the #20 spot, VCU welcomed Davidson to Stu for the Atlantic 10 home opener on Wednesday night. After being projected to be 12th coming into the Atlantic 10 conference, Davidson hasn't really surprised anyone but is far exceeding projections. With VCU's momentum in full swing, the sold out Siegel Center crown would see an exciting match up that saw VCU come out on top, 71-65.
VCU and Davidson are the top two offensive teams in the A10 and it was obvious to see why. They were neck and neck all night, exchanging shot after shot and would go into halftime with just a 4 point difference with VCU on top, 38-34.
The Rams would enjoy a consistent 8-10 point lead halfway through the second half but Davidson would not go away quietly and would cut the VCU lead to just 5 points with 5:25 left in the game.
Scoring came from everywhere tonight for VCU. The first Ram to hit double digits in scoring tonight was Freshman Terry Larrier with 10 minutes left to play in the game. Senior Treveon Graham would eventually lead all scorers with 15 points while Larrier Junior Melvin Johnson would both chip in 11 on the night.
Sophomore Jordan Burgess was back in the starting lineup after sitting out against Fordham due to an ankle injury. Senior Briante Weber moved to share possession of the 4th spot on the all-time steals list with Cookie Belcher (Nebraska).
VCU's defense held Davidson to shooting just 38% from the field while VCU only shot 42%.
Ram fans took a moment of silence prior to tip off to recognize the passing of lifelong VCU fan and former VCU business professor, Eugene "Gene" Hunt, Ph.D, who passed away this week at 81 years of age.
VCU moves to 2-0 on the conference and 10-3 on the season. VCU will host Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 2p.m. and the game will be aired on CBS Sports Network.
