VCU entered their lone exhibition game for the 2021-22 season with four returning faces and one incoming freshman in the starting lineup.
Jayden Nunn (Flint, MI) started in place of point guard, Ace Baldwin, <a href="https://www.vcuramnation.com/2021/06/vcu-starting-point-guard-ace-baldwin-suffers-ruptured-achilles-tendon/">who suffered a ruptured achilles tendon</a> during the offseason.
Nunn was one of five brand new Rams to take the court in tonights exhibition against Virginia State University Trojans. He would end the night with 2 points and 2 assists.
With 5 new faces overall, the Rams needed to spread out minutes—and scoring—to try to replace the loss of Baldwin and fellow guard, Jamir Watkins (<a href="https://www.vcuramnation.com/2021/09/vcu-sophomore-guard-jamir-watkins-out-with-torn-acl/">Torn ACL</a>).
VCU would end the night with scoring from all 12 players on their roster who saw action in the exhibition.
KeShawn Curry and Vince Williams were expected to lead scoring and did not disappoint.
In fact, just one day after Halloween, both players had an eerily similar stat line of 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Overall the Rams shot 26-63 from the floor for 41%.
Five different Rams hit from long range to tally 35% shooting on the evening while hitting 8-23.
There were alley-oops and windmill dunks, too, and incoming transfer, Marcus Tsohonis, put up a team high 6 assist to go with his 6 points on the night.
VCU turned VSU over 22 times while turning that into 17 points for the home squad.
The Rams out-rebounded the Trojans 48-43 while also keeping them to just 34% from the floor overall.
Plenty to work on before the opening tip of the regular season as VCU coughed the ball up 17 times and committed 23 fouls on the evening.
The Rams also dropped their collective free throw showing down to 50% on 14-28 attempts.
But, with so many new faces—including having a fully-attended Siegel Center for the first time in over a year—this is where you want to get the nerves out.
