VCU unable to mount comeback; lose to Rhode Island, 81-68

The folks over at ESPN2 knew what they were doing when they circled tonights matchup on their calendar for primetime viewing.

It was a breakneck pace throughout the contest as VCU (14-9; 6-4 A10) was unable to overcome the talents of #22 Rhode Island, 81-68.

URI came into tonights game—and will remain— undefeated and leading the A10 in conference standings.

Rhode Island jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before VCU freshman Sean Mobley hit a layup and accompanying free throw.

Mobley would score all 15 of his career-high points in the first half. Including a perfect 4-4 from three point range.

Cyril Langevine scored the final points for URI in the first half—a pair of free throws with just under 2 minutes before halftime.

De'Riante Jenkins (9pts/4reb/3ast) made two free throws for VCU with under a minute on the clock leading into halftime to bring the game within 3 points.

That was as close as VCU would get for the remainder of the contest.

Langevine went on to score 12 points on the night while grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds.

URI out-rebounded VCU to the tune of 47-31—a 16 point margin.

Those extra rebounds lead to 26 second-chance points for URI. VCU, however, was only able to convert those rebounds into 6 points.

Justin Tillman score a game-high 22 points and added 6 rebounds on the night for VCU. It was his 17th straight game with at least 10 points.

VCU will return to action Wednesday, February 7th as the travel to face crosstown rival, University of Richmond. That game is set to tip at 9:00pm and will be broadcast on CBS SportsNet.
