VCU unable to overcome St. Bonaventure in A10 Finals matchup

VCU (19-7) was unable to overcome the upperclass leadership of St. Bonaventure as the Rams fell in the Final os the A10 Tournament, 74-65.

The Rams were without their leading scoring, Bones Hyland, for the final 12 minutes of the first half as he picked up 3 fouls in 8 minutes of play.

Despite going scoreless in the first half, Hyland still managed end the game with a team-high 21 points.

Vince Williams led the Rams with 9 rebound to go with his 12 point performance.

Overall the Bonnies won the battle of the boards, 42-32, including a 13-5 offensive rebounds margin over the Rams.

The 17 second-chance points for St. Bonaventure were the difference in the game.

The box score otherwise was fairly evenly matched.

The Rams and Bonnies shot 41% and 40%, respectively, overall from the floor.

Led by Kyle Lofton's 4-5 from deep, the Bonnies connected on 8-19 overall.

Lofton had a game-high 23 points.

The Rams were 6-18 from deep for 33% on the game.

VCU trailed 32-25 going into the locker room, but a 6-0 run early in the second half pulled the Rams within 5 points.

But, a 14-3 response from the Bonnies, including 9 straight points from Lofton.

This is the first time a  one-seed has won the A10 tournament since the 2013 St. Louis Billikens took the title.

It's the first A10 Championship win for the Bonnies since 2012.

It's the sixth Finals appearance for the VCU Rams since joining the A10 in the 2013 season.

The Rams are 1-6 in Finals appearances in that time and have not cut down nets since their 2015 win over the Dayton Flyers.

For now, the Rams await the Sunday Selection Show to see where, and who, they will play in the NCAA Tournament.

The Selection Show will be broadcast live tonight, Sunday, March 14th, at 6pm EST.
