Last night we lost one.
VCU got their first real test of the season as the Shockers of Wichita State came to town in a rematch of last season's NCAA tournament matchup. Unfortunately for VCU and their fans, this happened to be a test we'd all like a retake on.
The Rams struggled in imposing their havoc wreaking system that usually turns turnovers into easy points and hit a paltry 12-of-24 free throw attempts, a 50% clip that proved to be the difference in last night's 53-51 loss.
VCU had chances late however, as senior Darius Theus nailed a game-tying three that had the sold out home crowd on their feet.
On the following posession, WSU guard Malcolm Armstead nailed a deep two-point jumper with just 3.5 ticks on the clock.
Shaka Smart drew up a beautiful play that VCU executed nearly perfectly on the last play of the game, as Treveon Graham's pass to halfcourt hit junior Juvonte Reddic, who then drove to the hoop for a layup attempt that just rolled off the rim after being fouled in the act of shooting.
After a game-high 22 points and brilliant offensive performance from Reddic, Ram fans saw his first free throw attempt roll off the rim, icing the game for the Shockers.
Check out the video to see how the final seconds went down, including the semi-controversial non-goal tend call, and post game reaction from Shaka Smart.
