VCU ground down GW tonight in an A-10 semifinal matchup before outscoring the Colonials 19-4 to finish the contest with the 74-55 win, advancing to the conference championship for the second consecutive season since joining the Atlantic 10.
Treveon Graham led all players with 22 points on 8-11 shooting and added four rebounds and four assists in the win.
Briante Weber once again proved he is more than just a defensive terror, scoring a 16 points after his 18-point quarterfinal performance while dishing out eight assists to just two turnovers. Weber grabbed six VCU rebounds on a night the smaller Rams out-rebounded GW 37-28 and had two steals in the effort.
Juvonte Reddic grabbed 10 of those rebounds and finished with four points on four attempts.
Rob Brandenberg scored nine points on the night including a big three-pointer to give VCU the two-point advantage heading into the half. All three of Brandenberg's field goals came from beyond the arche in the win.
The Rams got two strong performances from freshmen Jordan Burgess and Mo Alie-Cox. Burgess posted seven points and grabbed a game-high four steals in 32 minutes of play while big Mo scored eight points to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes for the Rams.
Those efforts of vital importance as the A-10's 2014 Sixth Man of the Year, Melvin Johnson, went down after just five minutes of play with a knee injury that will likely end his breakout season.
Johnson dove for a loose ball in the first half and seemed to twist his knee. The sophomore lay on the ground in severe pain before being carried off the court. He returned after halftime in a full leg brace.
The Rams will take on Saint Joseph's tomorrow at 1PM for the Atlantic 10 title. The Hawks defeated VCU the only time they played them this season, a 69-62 victory in Philadelphia that ended on a controversial charge call that erased a Treveon Graham bucket and free throw opportunity that could have potentially tied the game with 25 seconds remaining.
